Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, and Edenderry, Co. Offaly. Joseph John Bruntz, the only surviving son of ANDREW BERNARD BRUNTZ  ANDREW BERNARD BRUNTZ of Dublin, was born in Co. Dublin in 1881.  He was educated at national schools and by the Christian Brothers. He received private tuition in trigonometry and attended the City of Dublin Technical Schools for drawing classes, obtaining first-class honours in the intermediate course. He was a pupil in his father's office for four years and remained as an assistant for a further three years. After starting to practise independently as an architect circa 1915,(1) he moved in 1917 or 1918 to Edenderry, Co. Offaly, where he set up an office. From 1922 he held the position of architect and civil engineer to the Co. Offaly Board of Health. In 1926 he was elected to the post of engineer to the Co. Kildare Board of Health(2) and in 1927 he was nominated an appointed officer to the Local Government Department under the new housing acts for Edenderry No 1 & 2 and for Celbridge Rural District Councils.(3) He died in 1954, leaving a widow, a son and three daughters.(4)
