Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Headmaster of  Wicklow technical school from 1907 or earlier until 1915 or later. Richard Wake, son of George Wake, carpenter, was born in Godalming, Surrey, in 1869 or 1870.(1)  In 1901 he was working as a 'manual instructor' in Hull.(2)  By 1907 he had moved to Wicklow, to take up the position of headmaster of the technical school. and secretary of the technical instruction committee for the county.(3)   He designed a new technical school for the town in 1913(4) and technical schools in Arklow(5) and Baltinglass(6) in 1914.  He also did some private architectural work and submitted an entry 'in a severe classic style' in the Dublin municipal buildings competition of 1913.(7)  By 1922 he ad been replaced both as headmaster and as secretary by F.F. McCarthy.(8) and may well have returned to England.  At the time of the 1911 census, he had been married for eighteen years to his wife, Marion, and had six children.
