Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Builder, probably of Listowel, Co. Kerry, active from 1875(1) or earlier until at least 1895,when he was described in the Irish Builder as having 'erected the principal works in the district'.(2) Perhaps the same person as the James Scanlan of Elgin Road, Dublin, who built the new west front and spire of the Catholic church at Listowel to designs by Pugin & Ashlin in 1865-66.(3)

Date: 1895a
Nature: Alts and adds.comprising new suite of bedrooms overlooking River Feale, rooms for local club and 'one of the finest billiard rooms in Ireland'. Building carried on steel girders leaving yard underneath free for traffic. Completed Mar 1895. JS architect and contractor.
