Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

English architect and author of pattern books, for whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (4th edn, 2008), 879-881. After an apprenticeship to William Porden, Robinson became an assistant of HENRY HOLLAND HENRY HOLLAND . As Holland is known to have designed a gate lodge for the first Marquess of Sligo at Wesport, Co. Mayo, in 1808, it was presumably in this connection that Robinson exhibited a design for a marine bath 'now erecting' for the the Marquess at Westport at the Royal Academy in 1807.(1) Many years later, in 1833, he worked for Mathew Forde at Seaforde, Co. Down, where he designed the front gate and lodge and some almshouses.(2) In the 1836 edition of his Designs for Ornamental Villas, he included a 'Design in the modern Italian style…about to be erected in Ireland',(3) but there is no indication who the house was for or any evidence that it was built. J.A.K. Dean points out there are gate lodges at Baronscourt and Parkanaur, both in Co. Tyrone, which are taken from Robinsons's Designs for Lodges and Park Entrances (1833).(4)
