Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Galway City active from circa 1900 to 1940.   Allan Macdonald, who, according to the 1911 census, was born in Galway in 1868 or 1869,  was articled to GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN  GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN and spent a further three years as Ashlin's assistant before becoming a temporary assistant surveyor to the Board of Works.   When he applied for membership of the RIAI in 1905 he had also followed a three-year course of engineering lectures at Queen's College, Galway.   At the time of the 1911 census, he had been married for four years to his wife, Agnes, from Swinford, Co. Mayo, and had two children.

RIAI: elected member, 25 May 1905, having been proposed by GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN GEORGE COPPINGER ASHLIN , seconded by JOHN HOWARD PENTLAND  JOHN HOWARD PENTLAND and THOMAS ALOYSIUS COLEMAN THOMAS ALOYSIUS COLEMAN ;(1)   resigned 1940.(2)
