Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architectural partnership formed in 1918 between GEORGE FRANCIS BECKETT  GEORGE FRANCIS BECKETT and his assistant CYRIL ASHLIN HARRINGTON. CYRIL ASHLIN HARRINGTON. (1) Their designs for converting an old Dublin house into flats in a competition promoted by the RIAI were published in the Architects' Journalin 1919.(2) In Part 1 of another RIAI competition for a design for industrial dwellings, held in 1920, their entry was commended; in Part 2 they were among the first fifty.(3)  In 1924 they won the bronze medal in the architecture class at the Exhibition of Irish Art at Ballsbridge.(4)   During the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s they were architects to the Munster & Leinster Banking Co., for whom they designed a large number of branch banks across the country.  Pupils and assistants in the office included FREDERICK MACMANUS FREDERICK MACMANUS . On the retirement of Beckett in 1950, the practice was continued by Harrington with J. Desmond Featherstone and D.N. Haughton.(5)

In 2002 Featherstone's widow, Nora, presented the Irish Architectural Archive with a large collection of drawings and files from her husband's office, which includes some later Beckett & Harrington material (Acc.2002/073).
