County surveyor for Co. Sligo, 1907-1942. Robert Joseph Kirwan, son of Henry and Jean Kirwan, was born in Co. Galway on 21 August 1869. After obtaining the BE degree of the Royal University of Ireland in 1893 he became a pupil of JOHN HENRY RYAN JOHN HENRY RYAN and EDWARD TOWNSEND EDWARD TOWNSEND , who were then engaged on the planning and construction of the Galway to Clifden railway line. In 1895 he set up in private practice in Tuam, Co. Galway. He was appointed county surveyor for Sligo in February 1907 in the place of CHARLES BOOTH JONES CHARLES BOOTH JONES and held the post until 1942. In 1917 he and a group of partners leased the Abbeytown lead and zinc mines for three years. He died in 1949 or 1950. At the time of the 1911 census he had been married for five years to his English-born wife, Lydia, and had two young sons.
