JOHNSTON, JAMES VALENTINE

Architect, of Derry city. James Johnston was born on 14 February 1882 in Derry. After serving his articles with ROBERT ECCLES BUCHANAN , he worked in the office of JAMES LOUIS DONNELLY of DOOLIN BUTLER & amp; DONNELLY . He then spent six years as assistant to MATTHEW ALEXANDER ROBINSON in Derry before setting up his own practice as an architect, civil engineer and land surveyor in Derry in 1908.(1) In 1930 Limavady Urban District Council appointed him architect in connection with their new housing scheme.(2) He died suddenly in bed at his lodgings in Strand Road, Derry, 'after only a night's illness' on 18 February 1932, having married in 1930.(3) He was a freemason.
