- Selected:
JACKSON, THOMAS
- Born: 1807 Died: 1890
Architect, of Belfast. Thomas Jackson was born of Quaker parents in Waterford in 1807. His father, Anthony Jackson (1783ca-1859), a freeman of the City of Waterford, was the great-great grandson of an earlier Anthony Jackson, who came to Ireland from Lancashire in 1649 and settled in Oldcastle, Co. Meath.(1) The earlier Anthony Jackson had attended the first Quaker meeting in Ireland, which was held in Lurgan in 1654. Thomas Jackson was articled to George Dymond in Bristol before moving to Ulster in 1829 to become the partner of THOMAS DUFF of Newry, with responsibility for the Duff's newly established Belfast branch office. The partnership lasted until 1835, when Jackson set up his own practice. A proposed partnership with THOMAS TURNER in 1854 came to nothing.(2)
On New Year's Day 1835, Jackson married Lydia Newsom Ridgeway who, like himself, came from the Quaker community in Waterford. The couple had two sons, ANTHONY THOMAS JACKSON and WILLIAM RIDGEWAY JACKSON , who both worked in partnership with their father for a time. It is difficult to get a clear idea of Jackson's partnership with his sons from the notices and illustrations of their works in the Irish Builder; the attributions to 'Thomas Jackson & Son' and 'Thomas Jackson & Sons' do not follow a clear-cut sequence and, in any case, may not always be accurate. It appears that both sons entered into partnership with their father in 1867(3) but that Anthony practised independently from circa 1870, probably from 1869 when he designed the new Belfast Town Hall. William remained with his father for several years longer - definitely until 1877,(4) and perhaps as late as 1881(5) - before emigrating to Australia. Thomas Jackson appears to have done very little work after this and died in 1890.
Jackson was primarily a domestic architect, though he turned his hand to buildings of every type, commercial, industrial, educational and ecclesiastical. He was architect to the Ulster Bank, but the design of the head office was given to JAMES HAMILTON of Glasgow. He was also architect to the Banbridge, Lisburn & Belfast Railway.(6) In 1850 he is described as 'development agent for Robert Thompson, owner of the Clonard Factory Estate'.(7)
Besides designing individual buildings, Jackson was responsible for two ambitious suburban developments in Belfast. The Cliftonville development, begun in the 1830s and based on the Clifton suburb of Bristol, was only partly carried out as Jackson planned. Later, from circa 1861,(8) he created a development of large houses in spacious grounds to the east and west of Old Holywood Road on the north-eastern edge of the city.
Jackson's pupils and assistants included JEREMIAH MCAULEY. (9)
