Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Cork. Samuel Francis Hynes, who came of an old Cork family,(1) was born in 1854. He was articled to WILLIAM ATKINS  WILLIAM ATKINS in Cork in 1869, serving a five-year pupilage. He travelled on the Continent before establishing himself in independent practice in Cork in 1875. In 1877 the Irish Builder published two of his designs - for the chapel of the Convent of Mercy, Bantry,(2) and for the De Vesci Memorial, Abbeyleix,(3) - and in 1878 his 'Design for a memorial altar'.(4) He exhibited architectural and topographical drawings at the Irish Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures, Dublin, in 1882, and further architectural drawings at the Cork Industrial Exhibition in 1883.(5)

For over forty years Hynes practised from a number of different addresses in South Mall, Cork, receiving the greater part of his commissions from the Catholic priesthood and religious orders. His last works to be recorded in the Irish Builder date from 1921. He retired from practice in 1929 and died, unmarried, at the age of seventy-seven on 28 June 1931, leaving an estate valued at £24,325.(6) His pupils and assistants included NOEL EDMUND SCOTT.  NOEL EDMUND SCOTT.
