HAMILTON, DAVID #
- Born: 1768 Died: 1843
Architect of Glasgow, for whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (4th edn., 2008) 470, and Dictionary of Scottish Architects, www.scottisharchitects.org. David Hamilton is probably the 'Mr Hamilton' who was one of the entrants in the competition for the Wellington Testmonial, Dublin, of 1813-1815.(1) His design, like ROBERT SMIRKE' s winning entry, was for an obelisk and was one of the six proposals to be short-listed. David Hamilton had designed a monument to Nelson for Glasgow in 1806 which was also in the form of an obelisk.
