Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Landscape gardener and topographical writer. James Fraser was born in Edinburgh in 1793. He worked at Trinity College Botanic Garden in Dublin, and was head gardener to Frederick Bourne at Terenure, Co. Dublin, when he came to the notice of J.C. Loudon. The two men became friends. Loudon, who considered Fraser an 'excellent botanist and gardener as well as a man of general information', appointed him Irish correspondent of his Gardener's Magazine. Fraser set himself up as a professional landscape gardener in 1829 and supplemented his income by writing travel guides. He died in 1863 from complications arising from a chest cold at his house at 25 Westland Row and was buried at Harold's Cross Cemetery, Dublin.(1)
