Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Stone-cutter, of Dublin. Hill Darley was born in 1735, a younger son of ARTHUR DARLEY[1]  ARTHUR DARLEY[1] by his wife Mary Wirling and brother of GEORGE DARLEY[2] GEORGE DARLEY[2] , JOHN DARLEY JOHN DARLEY , and ARTHUR DARLEY ARTHUR DARLEY . He was working with a George Darley, presumably his elder brother George Darley[2], from at least 1769,(1) but the two names do not appear together in Wilson's Dublin Directory until circa 1786, when their address is given as 5 Mercer Street; in the 1783 edition this had been the address of George Darley, junior, alone. Wilson's Dublin Directory continues to list George and Hill Darley at this address until 1799, but also lists George Darley, junior, on his own at a different address in 1797-99.

Hill Darley died in 1800,(2) though he continues to be listed in Wilson's Directory at 5 Mercer Street until 1803. George and Hill Darley were responsible for a number of designs for chimneypieces iwhich are now in the Royal Irish Academy.(3) A bill for an urn and chimneypieces supplied by George and Hill Darley to William Ashford of Sandymount in 1788-9 is included among these drawings.
